Breathe IN/OUT im Osthaus Museum (15. August bis 20.

2019 realisierte Wang Huangsheng den Film: „Breathe In/Out“.

Wang Huangsheng
Breathe IN/OUT

Wang Huangsheng is one of the most important artists in the Chinese contemporary art scene. He was born in Shantou, Guangdong Province in 1956. He lives and works in Beijing. In addition to his artistic work, he also works as a curator and art critic and teaches at academies and universities. From 2000 to 2009 he was director of the Guangdong Museum of Art, from 2009 to 2017 he headed the CAFA Art Museum. He also founded and organized the Guangzhou Triennial, the Guangzhou Photo Biennale, the CAFAM Biennale and the Beijing Photo Biennale.

In his works, from the early ink works to the installations, Wang Huangsheng prefers different techniques and visual languages that are committed to a common code. For him, painting the line, calligraphy, is the basis for Chinese art and also for his painting. The relationship to space, to spatiality in images, plays a key role here. From 2011, with the beginning of the “Moving Vision Series”, Wang Huangsheng developed a visual world that made a new vision necessary for his work. In his visual works, he now preferred lines that are no longer required to reproduce, they only represent themselves. This freedom of the line was continued in the next few years, but color accents were added to the black and white forms, a thickening of the ink, that sometimes led to a kind of cloud structure. Floating, free play with the line are the central themes of this series.

In 2019, Wang Huangsheng realized the film: “Breathe In / Out”. A scene in a studio loft, oxygen bottles in the center, large-format pictures in the background, breathing noises from off-screen, the artist enters the room in an artificial fog with drumsticks in his hands. He moves around the oxygen cylinders, artfully strikes them, and lashing music begins at the middle of the film, which turns the artist into a dancer. There is something evocative about this expressive dance, the artist is in a kind of trance for a short time. The danger of slipping is averted by the withdrawal of the music and the resumption of breathing, the rhythm is reduced, in the end the oxygen bottle visible at the beginning is brought back into focus, a last a gong-like stroke – end.

Selected video works, multi-part installations, photos and drawings by the artist from 2012 to 2019 are shown.

The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Society for German-Chinese Cultural Exchange e.V., (GeKA e.V.) Berlin, and with Kunstraum Villa Friede, Bonn.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at 4 p.m. All interested parties are invited.
